High Fashion on the Big Screen
What: The Rules of the GameWhen: 1939
Who: Coco Chanel
Mlle Chanel counted the French filmmaker Jean Renoir among her circle of intellectual friends and lent her talents—and her namesake house's wares—to his films. She provided lavish, regal costumes for the monarchs and courtiers of La Marseillaise (1937), but dressing the wealthy country house denizens of Renoir's most famous film, The Rules of The Game, found her squarely in her element.
